1. Microsoft Gains Ground as Google’s Market Share Falls Below 90%

Google has taken a rare stumble: for the first time since 2015, its market share has dropped below 90%—a decline particularly noticeable in Asia. Meanwhile, its competition Microsoft Bing has quietly doubled its market share to 4%. Though the number looks modest, it could reflect a significant change in the space where Google is king.

The reason is not exactly clear, but it could be attributed to a number of factors like “unhelpful” search results, legal scrutinies, and the rise of AI alternatives. However, whether this is an anomaly or the start of an actual trend remains to be seen.

What this means for you:

While Google is still the undisputed leader when it comes to search, this news might illustrate changing user behaviour and growing interest in alternative platforms. With Bing’s bigger market share and the arrival of AI search platforms, there’s no better time to start diversifying your SEO strategy.

2. Instagram Launches ‘Edits,’ A CapCut Rival

As TikTok went offline in the US, Instagram’s Adam Mosser introduced Edits, a video editing app that bears an uncanny resemblance to CapCut, which is owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. Meta promotes this app as a full-featured alternative, complete with inspiration feeds, analytics, and all the necessary editing tools.

While Meta insists they’ve been working on the app for months, the timing of the launch—amidst the controversial TikTok ban—feels more than coincidental.

Editswill be available to the public on 13 March 2025.

What this means for you:

Strange timing aside, Editssounds like a powerful tool with great features, not to mention the capability to connect with new audiences. The real advantage lies in being among the first to use it while it’s still fresh, as it will potentially be integrated into Meta’s broader ecosystem.

3. Google Ads Adds New Promo Code Options

We also have another update from Google Ads, which has decided to add new barcode and QR options for its Promotion Assets. The barcode option supports various formats, while up to 720 characters are allowed for QR codes. With these options, it is easier for customers to redeem offers both online and in-store.

On the advertiser side, these updates allow greater flexibility in running cross-channel promotions and tracking redemptions, which could boost engagement and drive higher conversion rates.

What this means for you:

Google Ads’ addition of barcode and QR options will help you connect with your audiences more conveniently and efficiently. This can potentially provide more precise tracking for your campaigns, too, so consider using the features for your future promotions.

4. Meta’s ‘Community Notes’ Will Exclude Paid Ads

Meta has recently announced a new feature that allows the community to fact-check organic posts, similar to X’s Community Notes. However, this feature won’t cover paid ads—at least for now. According to Meta, it will initially exclude brand and influencer content, which leaves its scope rather narrow.

Community Notes is meant to promote truthful information, especially when it comes to political and controversial content. But, apparently, if you’re paying Meta, your message wouldn’t have to be subjected to the same level of community scrutiny.

What this means for you:

The exclusion of paid ads from Meta’s version of Community Notes is interesting, as it may or may not directly affect you. While organic content will face closer inspection, paid advertising offers a freer way to deliver a message (again, at least for now).

However, as users demand more accountability from brands, it is crucial to make sure your virtual marketing strategy delivers this. With or without Community Notes, transparency and honesty will be key to maintaining credibility in the long-term.
